This is an impressive array of 14 cards from the prestigious N28 Allen & Ginter “The World Champions” multi-sport issue, arguably the most important 19th Century sportscard set. The elegant 1 ½-by-2 ¾-inch cards picture champions from baseball, boxing, wrestling, rowing, billiards and rifle shooters, and this particular grouping includes 14 Boxers (Pugilists on the checklist on the card backs) and Wrestlers, with most in a condition dramatically better than these treasures are typically encountered in mature collections. The condition range is broadly Very Good to Ex-Mt, with some below; cards deemed Fair often represent a good deal better and contend with the lower assessment only because of slight paper loss on the reverse. Here’s the breakdown – Boxers (8): Kilrain – Ex-Mt (light discoloration on reverse), Smith – VG-Ex, Mitchell – Fair, Carney – Ex-Mt, Weir – Fair, McAuliffe – VG (staining on reverse),. Lannon – Ex-Mt-Plus and Carroll – Ex; Wrestlers (6): Muldoon – Ex-Mt-Plus, Action – VG (light staining on reverse), Bauer – Fair, Sorakichi – VG-Ex, McMahoon – VG and Young Bibby – Fair.
