Like an adjoining lot, this is an imposing array of 14 cards from the prestigious N28 Allen & Ginter “The World Champions” multi-sport issue, arguably the most important 19th Century sports card set. The elegant 1 ½-by-2 ¾-inch cards picture champions from baseball, boxing, wrestling, rowing, billiards and shooting, and this particular grouping is headlined by the legendary Annie Oakley, and the group features cards from the subsets of Rifle Shooters, Billiards and Oarsmen, with two of the cards slabbed by SGC. The handsome Oakley card (Rifle Shooters) presents in a fashion well above its Fair technical grade, affixed with the lower assessment only because of slight paper loss on the reverse. Most of the cards in this array are found in a condition significantly better than these cards are typically encountered in mature collections. The condition range is broadly Excellent to Ex-Mt, with some below. Here’s the breakdown – Rifle Shooters (2): Oakley – Fair and Carver – SGC 80; Billiards (5): Vignaux – Ex-Mt, Malone – Excellent, Dion – Ex (light staining on the reverse), Slosson – Ex (staining on reverse) and Schaefer – Fair; Oarsmen (6): Teemer – Ex-Mt, Bubear – Ex (staining on reverse), Hosmer – Ex, Trickett – Ex (staining on reverse), McKay – VG-Ex and Ross – Ex (light staining on reverse).
