Presented is an absolutely spectacular example of an elegant 19th Century metamorphic trade card, offered here in a striking SGC 2 holder that shows off the 1888 Goodwin & Co. card to good effect, arguably a presentation that seemingly exceeds the technical grade. The 7 ¼-by-5 ½-inch beauty is entitled “An Interesting Interview” depicted by a colorful scene on the front comically emphasizing the importance of a youngster buying only Old Judge Cigarettes by having an elder administer a hickory stick to the poor kid’s backside for his apparently returning from the store with something other than the preferred brand. The metamorphic component is the fold-over “umbrella” that alters the card size to 4 ½-by-3 ¾ inches, effectively concealing the corporal punishment aspect. The back of the card provides redemption information for collectors to redeem coupons from Old Judge or Gypsy Queen Cigarettes (25) for a postpaid Base Ball Player Cabinet Photograph, the legendary Old Judge Cabinets that remain perhaps the marquee item for 19th Century baseball card collectors. As noted above, the card presents in a fashion significantly above the technical grade, which presumably was dictated by an unobtrusive pencil mark directly at the bottom of the back; some local stamping also appears at the top of the umbrella. The card carries notations of Copyright 1888 and Giles Litho and Liberty Printing, NY on the back near the bottom edge.
