Presented is an attractive example of the Bill Dahlen card in the coveted 1910 E98 “Set of 30,” a card that looks precisely as it might have looked when it rolled off the presses despite its fabled 110-year heritage. “Bad Bill” Dahlen is arguably the greatest names not duly ensconced in Cooperstown, a man with career numbers as a shortstop – 21 seasons, 2,261 hits, 84 home runs, 1,234 RBI and 548 stolen bases – that would seemingly make an ironclad case for induction. The E98s were among the scarcest of the turn-of-the-century Caramel cards, an evaluation hardly jostled by the remarkable “Black Swamp Find” in Defiance, Ohio, eight years ago. The pristine E98s in this auction look for all the world like the denizens of that mystical attic find, and this amazing Dahlen pasteboard is relegated to “only” an SGC 5 Excellent designation perhaps based on centering, since the corners are sharp and the pastel green background nothing short of superb.
