Offered is a simply breathtaking SGC 7.5 Near-Mint-Plus example of the coveted 1910 E98 “Set of 30” Connie Mack, yet another example of hobby royalty that looks precisely as it might have looked when it rolled off the presses despite its fabled 110-year heritage. The legendary manager tallied 3,731 wins in a career that included a tenure as a player in the 19th century and would eventually add owner status during his 51 years with the Philadelphia Athletics. Toss in five World Series titles and his 1937 Hall of Fame induction and the picture is more complete but hardly exhausted. The E98s were among the scarcest of the turn-of-the-century Caramel cards, an evaluation hardly jostled by the remarkable “Black Swamp Find” in Defiance, Ohio, eight years ago. The pristine E98s in this auction look for all the world like the denizens of that mystical attic find that startled the hobby back then, and this amazing Mack specimen, one of the more expensive cards in the set, is found here in virtually Mint condition. The blood-red background could hardly be more vivid or compelling, enhancing an already provocative image of the HOFer as a young man barely underway in his Cooperstown journey.
