Offered is a striking SGC 6 Ex-Mint example of the coveted 1910 E98 “Set of 30” Cy Young, yet another example of hobby royalty that looks much as it might have looked when it rolled off the presses despite its fabled 110-year heritage. With 511 wins in a career that spanned the end of the 19th century and the dawn of the 20th, Young was without peer in compiling three no-hitters and a perfect game, all tucked into a career log that will likely never be challenged. Like his counterpart in this amazing “Set of 30,” Young was part of the original class inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936. The E98s were among the scarcest of the turn-of-the-century Caramel cards, an evaluation hardly jostled by the remarkable “Black Swamp Find” in Defiance, Ohio, eight years ago that added hundreds of cards to the known roster and at the same time brought the “Set of 30” new followers and avid collectors. The pristine E98s in this auction look for all the world like the denizens of that mystical attic find that startled the hobby back then, and this extraordinary Young card is one of the four keys to the issue. With its pastel green background and sharp corners, one suspects that only the slight “diamond cut” might have precluded an even higher grade than its SGC 6 Ex-Mt blessing.
