Presented is a blazing SGC 7 Near-Mint example of the coveted 1910 E98 “Set of 30” Hans Wagner, hobby royalty of the first order that looks like it just rolled off the presses despite its fabled 110-year heritage. Hans was the biggest star in Major League Baseball in 1910, as his eight National League batting titles and exalted status as one of the first-five inductees into the Hall of Fame in 1936 will attest. The E98s were among the scarcest of the turn-of-the-century Caramel cards, an evaluation hardly jostled by the remarkable “Black Swamp Find” in Defiance, Ohio, eight years ago that added hundreds of cards to the known roster and at the same time brought the “Set of 30” new followers and avid collectors. The E98s in this auction look for all the world like denizens of that mystical attic find that startled the hobby back then, and this particular Wagner is one of the four keys to the issue. With its blistering red background and razor-sharp corners, one can only conclude that centering of about 65-35 on the front and more severe on the back probably account for its being awarded “only” SGC 7 Near-Mint laurels.
