Here’s an opportunity that doesn't come along every day: the chance to pick up essentially ½ of a complete set of the most coveted baseball card issue of the Depression Era, the colorful 1933 Goudey classic. That’s intriguing enough on the face of it, but the array also includes almost two dozen Hall of Famers, most notably the No. 160 Lou Gehrig and other keys like Bill Terry, Mel Ott, Dizzy Dean, Hack Wilson, Lefty Grove, Charlie Gehringer and Mickey Cochrane, to name a few. The condition range is essentially Fair to Very Good, with two dozen cards above the range and only nine cards below it, a fairly typical distribution for this issue when found in mature collections. It comes out to 5 percent Excellent, 15 percent VG-Ex, 26 percent Very Good, 25 percent Good, 22 percent Fair and 7 percent Poor. There is minimal duplication in the array and four of the cards have been third-party slabbed and graded: No. 110 Goslin – PSA 4, No. 125 Terry – PSA 4.5, No. 207 Ott – PSA1 and No. 223 Dean – PSA 3. There is also a solitary 1934 Goudey that found its way into the group: No. 52 Bell – Very Good. Here’s the breakdown: Excellent (5) – No. 111, 121, 192, 217 and 218; VG-Ex (19) – No. 97, 98, 110 Goslin – PSA 4, 114, 120, 122, 123, 125 Terry – PSA 4.5, 126, 166, 173, 175, 191, 196, 198, 205, 215, 236 and 238; Very Good (32) – No. 100, 107 Manush (2), 109 Cronin, 11, 112, 116, 123, 124, 125 Terry, 129, 130, 142, 172, 173, 174, 175, 178, 190, 195, 197 Ferrell, 199, 214, 219, 222 Gehringer, 223 Dean – PSA 3.5, 228, 229, 233, 237 and 240 (2); Good (31) – No. 57, 58, 60 Hoyt, 64 Grimes, 76 Cochrane, 83, 84, 99 (2), 108, 117 Maranville, 121, 122, 124, 126, 129, 136, 141, 142, 168 Goslin, 171, 176, 183, 200, 210, 217, 220 Grove, 221, 231, 232 and 239; Fair (27) – No. 9, 64 Grimes, 97, 98, 101, 102, 108, 112, 134 Rice, 145, 158, 167, 168 Goslin, 169, 174, 177, 180, 185, 187, 189 Cronin, 196, 204, 209, 211 Wilson, 212 and 224; Poor (10) – No. 44 Bottomley, 100, 139, 147 Durocher, 158, 160 Gehrig, 176, 183, 207 Ott – PSA 1 and 215.
