Here is a simply spectacular road flannel jersey and pants from one of the truly legendary minor-league franchises, the Toledo Mud Hens, a 1947 uniform in impeccable condition and attributed to pitcher Chet Johnson. The heavy-wool flannel has ragland sleeves and seven-button front (one button missing), with beautiful navy/red/navy piping on the collar and button path and red and blue piping on the sleeves. Blazing red and blue felt elements are straight-stitched affixed to the “Toledo” on the front and the No. 20 on the back. There is almost no fraying of the delicate stitching to his No. 20, with just a couple of small areas of separation; there are also a couple of small, unobtrusive holes on the back left shoulder. Sleeve ends were shortened and then additions were added, probably during the labeling period, with shade and tone of flannels differing slightly from original sleeve material. Collar has Wilson labeling with adjacent flap tag of Size 44 and felt swatch “47” below, both in red chain stitching. Alterations include No. 20 at 7 ½ inches and “Toledo” at 3 1/8 inches. Pants have Wilson labeling with Size 36 flap tag and grey felt swatch tag below with “47” in red chain stitching: waistband has “27” in marker. Four-button fly (three are present) and piping down the sides matching the shirt’s button path and collar.
