The baseball card giant that is Topps Gum started in earnest in 1951 with the production of five small card sets featuring players both contemporary and from generations past. The most familiar are the 52-card "Red Back" cards called "Doubles" which also served as playing cards for a tabletop baseball game. The cards seem tame by today's standard but represent the cornerstone of the most prolific producer of cards in the hobby. Offered is an original two-piece retail box that once played host to 120 packs. The top protective cover has heavy overall wear throughout, with the entire tip and all four sides present, but numerous holes and discoloration. The inner piece was nicely protected and has just light wear, with the die-cut top panel separated from the base.
