October 24, 2024: Fall Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/24/2024
For one of the greatest hitters of all time, finding a fielding pose on a dramatic 1953 Topps painting of Willie Mays might have been jarring for eager youngsters 70 years ago, but serious fans knew Mays was as preeminent in centerfield as he was at the plate. And the fabled painting of Mays used to produce his 1953 Topps card would prove to be nearly as iconic as the player himself; almost four decades later, the original artwork, hardly much larger than the card itself, would sell at auction for an amazing $90,000. Remember, nearly 40 years ago that was considered a lot of money. Any guesses on what it would bring today? This one arrives in a PSA 5.5 holder with near perfect centering and a colorful surface, but the bottom right corner held it from EX/MT.
