Offered is a nice collectible example of the iconic 1956 Topps Baseball set, the company’s final effort in the larger 2 5/8-by-3 ¾-inch format that so elegantly depicted the great stars of the period in a horizontal design. It’s an issue that perhaps more than any other before or since placed the ballplayers within the showcase of the great ballparks of the times, a card set that offers an eloquent homage to the game itself as much as the men who played it. The presented set comes out to broadly 9 percent Excellent, 46 percent Very Good to VG-Ex, 39 percent Good and 7 percent Fair. Barely more than five dozen cards have the kind of centering that might prompt thoughts of upgrading, though not all of those would be severe enough to dictate a formal off-center designation.
