Here’s a marvelous bit of memorabilia from more than 60 years ago promoting the admittedly cheezy movie “Safe at Home,” five different examples of an 11-by-14-inch artifact picturing the two MLB stars who were nominally also the stars of the film. Fresh off their epic home run battle and chase of Babe Ruth’s record in 1961, the pair polished up their theatrical bona fides for this campy comedy that told the story of a Florida youngster who lied to his classmates about knowing the two ballplayers. The offered pieces, with stamping of “Theatre Poster Service” on the reverse, present in Good to Very Good fashion, with most having tiny extraneous pencil notations in one corner indicating an aftermarket price. A Columbia Pictures copyright appears alongside; Mickey and Roger didn’t have to carry the theatrical demands without assistance, aided by a capable cast that included William Frawley (later of “I Love Lucy” fame) and cameos by Yankee pals Manager Ralph Houk and Whitey Ford.
