Here’s an artifact so difficult and highly coveted that it would elicit dramatic interest even in lesser grades, but really turns heads in this kind of blazing Near-Mint status. In a fabled series riddled with Hall of Famers, the 1960 NL Most Valuable Player holds a unique status as perhaps the most difficult to find among all his peers from the 18-statue set. As noted, this is an outstanding figure, with an attractive painting effort and just the barest whisper of toning; the statue stands nicely. Thought to have been produced in significantly smaller numbers than his counterparts, the rarity of the Groat figure has long placed it among the true Holy Grails for advanced collectors. Conventional wisdom suggests the production run for Groat was “only” 5,000, which is a fraction of the believed totals of many of the others approaching 100,000 or more.
