This is a pile of vintage volumes of The Bible of Baseball, the iconic The Sporting News that for the better part of century chronicled the day-to-day of Major League Baseball for generations of fans. This amazing pile is spread between more than two dozen large boxes, seemingly with each one heavier than the one before. The volumes are certainly in a nice collectible condition, improving a bit as the decades move along, but almost all collector-worthy; there is some duplication, and the overall condition improves most noticeably in the 1970s and beyond. We'll provide what detail we can in the listing that follows – numbers can be approximations but yet we hope reasonably close. Here’s the breakdown: 1) 1970 (22) – with covers of Felipe Alou, Rose, Fosse, Hudson, Dawson and a World Series Special Issue; 2) 1971 (44) – with covers of Torre, Frank Robinson, Oliva, Blue (2) and Carlton; 3) 1972 (69) – with covers of Spitz (3), Trevino, Walton and Sanguillen; 4) 1973 (67); 1974 (67); 1975 (69) – with covers of Morgan, Yount, Griffin, Swann and LaFleur; 1976 (101) – with covers of Bert Jones, Dantley, May, Griffin, and Bell (6); 1977 (92) – with covers of Rudi (4), John (4), Monday (2), Rice, Carew and Fox; 1978 (82) – including covers of Simmons and Rice; 1979 (69) – in a group a bit rougher in condition there are covers of Magic, Carter (4), Guidry, Lynn (4), Carew, Selmon (4) and the Redbirds (4); 1980 (39) – again a bit rougher, with covers of Harris, Campbell and Payton; 1981 (37) – again a bit rougher, with covers of Louisville Hoops (5), Bird, Kuhn/Miller (6), White Sox (8), Valenzuela, Raines (5), Bossy (5) and Lloyd/McEnroe (4); 1982 (165) – with covers of Erving, Malone, Rams QB, (7), Murray (2), Malone (3), Thomas, Hernandez and Super Bowl issue; 1983 (124) – also a bit rougher, with covers of Yastrzemski, Ryan, Elway, Jackson, Carew (3), Redskins, Brett and Herzog (3); 1984 (86) – again a bit rougher, with covers of Carl Lewis (2), Rose, Strawberry, Tigers (2) Gwynn and Moon; 1985 (117) – with covers of Mattingly, Henderson, Montana (3), Halper Collection, Gooden (2) and the Super Bowl issue; 1986 (113) – condition improves here, with covers of the Mets (5) and Walton (2); 1987 (61); and 1988 (36). There also are about a dozen or so TSN from 1937 in extremely rough (Poor) condition and another dozen or so primarily baseball preseason magazines. Whew! The pile is so imposing that the winning bidder will likely have to pick them up at the Collect Auctions offices in Waupaca or make particular arrangements to get their winning lot from Point A (Waupaca, WI) to Point B.
