There will always be something special about 1981 Fleer Baseball. Best known for the historical significance of being the product that broke Topps’ monopoly on baseball cards. Prior to 1981, collectors had only one set to chase, along with some oddball sets like Kellogg’s, Hostess and others. The 1981 Fleer set also led collectors on a crazy chase for error cards with reverse negatives, wrong stats and other errors. This was also the only year Fleer cards were issued with gum since Topps retained exclusive right to distribute its cards with gum the following year (thus the team logo stickers in 1982). The list of key names includes: Nolan Ryan, Tom Lasorda, Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, Tom Seaver, Andre Dawson, Willie Stargell, Ozzie Smith, Billy Martin, Carl Yastrzemski, Dan Quisenberry, Rickey Henderson, Sparky Anderson, Bobby Murcer, Joe Charboneau, Joe Torre, Gary Carter, George Brett and plenty more. The complete signed set is the only one we are aware of in the hobby. Each signature is pre-certified by PSA/DNA. There are several cards in this set which PSA/DNA was unable to render a definitive authentic opinion including: Johnny Bench, Ken Griffey, Dick Williams and Omar Moreno.
