John L. Sullivan, also known as the Boston Strong Boy, was an Irish-American boxer recognized as the first Heavyweight Champion of gloved boxing, holding the title from February 7, 1882, to 1892. He is generally recognized as the last heavyweight champion of bare-knuckle boxing under the London Prize Ring Rules. This original cabinet Type 1 photo was taken by Elmer Pickering, a photographer specializing in portraits in Boston, Massachusetts, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Sullivan is posed in a striped suit and signed, “Compliments of John L. Sullivan - To My Friend Ed Harkins, July 8th, 1908” in black steel-tip fountain pen. Sullivan signed photos virtually impossible to find and this one is authenticated by JSA with a full LOA.
