One of the most controversial figures in the history of sport was this man, whose story inspired Ken Burns PBS special entitled "Unforgivable Blackness." Johnson's assumption of the Heavyweight boxing title in 1910, and his affinity for white women, inflamed the deepest racism among white America and, according to Johnson, led to his intentional forfeiture of the title in 1915. This well-written tale of his own life discusses it all, though collectors will be most interested in the stunning black ink signature on the dedication page of the hardcover volume with no personalization, which is incredibly rare. The First Edition book (1927 National Sports Publishing Company) arrives with a full dust jacket and shows light toning to the page edges, but remains solid and complete. Essential reading, and an essential autograph, for any serious boxing enthusiast. Signature is authenticated by JSA with a full LOA. This will immediately become the centerpiece of any serious boxing autograph collection.
