Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1929-1994) Former first lady, married to the late president John F. Kennedy from 1953 until his death, then married Aristotle Onassis from 1968 until his death in 1975, then moved back to New York as an editor for Viking and Doubleday. Contents of her estate set many new records in a recent Sotheby's auction. Rare autograph letter signed, February 3, 1974, on light blue letterhead from 1040 5th Avenue, New York, to "Mr. Reed", headmaster of Collegiate School, Manhattan, 2 pages on separate sheets, in full "I know how strong your emotions were at leaving Collegiate, last Thursday evening. They were matched by the feelings of every parent in the room who ever had a child with you in the Middle School. I feel so sorry for the boys coming on who won't find you there - and so fortunate that you were there for John. A great teacher is the rare and greatest blessing that can pass through one's life. How they enlarged the world for one - How they enlarge it for one's children - I hope you realize how really extraordinary you are - I know you couldn't refuse to face a greater challenge - I know you will be happy once the missing people wears off. Please don't lose touch with us. If there is ever anything I could do I would be so happy to - with sadness and deep appreciation and all good wishes to you, dear Mr. Reed. Jacqueline Onassis". Small area of paper loss at top left of first page, otherwise fine.
