While casual fans might immediately default to his 1968 World Series heroics when thinking of Mickey Lolich, it’s worth remembering that he was a pretty fair country pitcher in 16 major league seasons as well, as this striking 14-inch high bronze statue attests. Saluting what was certainly his finest regular-season performance, the 1971 campaign saw Lolich notch a career-high 25 wins and 308 strikeouts, both of which led the American League. The heavy (10 lbs.) bronze statue has a 6 ¼-inch-square wooden base that is 3 inches high, with an attractive 11-inch tall bronze figure of a young boy in leg braces and with crutches. Engraving on a 2-by-4-inch bronze nameplate at the bottom notes “Detroit Tiger of the Year, Mickey Lolich, 1971.” A bronze medallion from the Detroit National Foundation of the March of Dimes is affixed to the left side of the base adjacent to the nameplate. All elements of the trophy appear to be essentially as-issued and problem free.
