Mickey Lolich got the save in the American League’s triumph over its rivals in the Senior Circuit, a rare win for the AL gang, aided in no small way by a monster Reggie Jackson home run that nearly left Tiger Stadium. As a hometown favorite, the game held particular cachet for Lolich, who has carefully guarded this handsome 34-inch commemorative bat for nearly a half century. The bat doesn’t look its age: it’s essentially precisely as issued, save only for a tiny, unobtrusive nick in the handle that presumably didn’t come from any hijinks at the ballpark, and in any event does not materially detract from the presentation. The Adirondack bat has the distinctive blue stripe and Big Stick and Flame Treated on the barrel, along with printed M. Lolich. A 3-by-2 ½-inch brass plate bears engraving that notes “To Commemorate the 1971 All-Star Game, Tiger Stadium, July 13th, Detroit, Michigan.”
