Offered here is a truly outstanding and consistent complete set of the iconic 1959 Fleer Life of Ted Williams issue, a mostly Near-Mint array, with about 25 percent Ex-Mt and only a couple below. This is a particularly attractive set that provides a wonderful, uniform presentation, with good centering, almost none of the dreaded packaging stains that so often bedevil this set, minimal browning of the front white border and superb, sharp colors and registration. The breakdown: Near-Mint (57) – No. 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28, 30, 31, 33, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 46, 48, 49, 50, 52, 54,55, 56 (presents Nr-Mt but has a bit of an odd cut), 57, 58, 59, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 70, 71, 72, 75, 75, 76, 77, 78 and 79; Ex-Mt (19) – No. 2, 3, 7, 11, 13, 17, 20, 25, 29 (slight staining), 32, 34, 44, 45, 51, 53, 60, 69, 74 and 80; Excellent – No. 47; and Very Good (2) – No. 1 and 6. With virtually all major league players tied to exclusive Topps contracts in 1959, Fleer rolled the dice by securing the rights to perhaps the biggest name in the game: Ted Williams. Fleer’s charming “Life of Ted Williams” set was sold in packs and through vending machines, offering an 80-card set of standard-size cards, with each and every one depicting Teddy Ballgame (The set is generally sold as “complete” with 79 of the 80 cards; No. 68 was withdrawn from production because of contractual conflicts with Topps). Simply put, this is a great opportunity to pick up a high-grade example of a popular 1950’s issue that chronicles the life of one of the most beloved figures in baseball history.
