Eons before the company was part of the baseball card expansion in 1981, Donruss stuck its toe in the non-sport arena with this campy 55-card black-and-white homage to the legendary King Kong and the classic RKO Pictures 1933 film. While the fronts are in black-and-white, the backs feature color puzzle pieces; the design of the quirky set was unique in featuring captioning bubbles that incorporate wisecracks that were not part of the feature film, along with several cards with the caption bubble left blank to invite collectors to write in their own musings. Inviting collectors to defile their treasures was a concept that might have horrified a later generation of serious hobbyists. This offered example of the charming issue is in a highly attractive Ex-Mt to Near-Mint condition and comes in nine-pocket sheets in a binder. A handful of condition anomalies include No. 7 (VG-Ex), No. 17 (Ex), No. 46 (Ex) and No. 52 (Ex); also included in the lot is an Ex-Mt wax pack wrapper.
