It’s the most famous (and expensive) baseball card extant, and with the winning bid on this unusual lot the lucky collector will own 9,000 pristine, presumably Mint examples of the record-setting T206 Honus Wagner card, albeit in reprint form. The first baseball card collectible to make the transition to the kind of haughty auction status more accustomed to the art world, the fabled Wagner card has captivated casual hobbyists and big-time investors alike for more than a half century, and along with the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card has probably been reprinted more than any other baseball card. Just as we presume the enclosed cards are in superb Mint condition, we also presume the reprint is clearly marked as such … but we just don’t know. It’s a sealed case, which is probably in Ex-Mt condition itself. For decades the formal hobby has theorized that perhaps five or six dozen genuine T206 Honus Wagner cards have survived into the 21st Century. Here’s a chance to bid on 9,000 look-alikes that are almost certainly in better condition than even the finest real one. Let the bidding begin.
