Offered is an imposing 21-inch loving cup trophy that was awarded to Mickey Lolich by IBM Cape Kennedy in the weeks following his historic effort in the 1968 World Series when he won three games and walked away with the MVP Trophy. The trophy has a 5 ½ silver baseball figure atop the 11-inch tall loving cup that rests on a wooden base 5 ½ inches square with a 4-inch square nameplate that notes “Mickey Lolich, Outstanding Professional Athlete of 1968, IBK Cape Kennedy, Nov. 16, 1968.” The trophy reveals a bit of dust after a half century and minimal tarnishing on the loving cup or its two ornate handles. It was the last World Series in the pre Divisional Playoff era, when the AL Champion Tigers faced off against the NL dynasty of the St. Louis Cardinals, appearing in the Fall Classic for the third time in five years. It was hyped as a battle between 31-game winner Denny McLain and the great Bob Gibson, coming off the finest season of his legendary career. And somewhere along the way the script flipped and the leading man became Lolich. This trophy was part of the vast armada of tributes that came Lolich’s way in the weeks and months following October of 1968.
