Regarded among the finest large-format baseball collectibles in the early years of the 20th Century – and this in an era that included the remarkable T3 Turkey Red cabinet cards – the fabled M101-2 Sporting News Supplements feature sepia-toned images of professional players on a heavy cardboard stock, most typically with blank backs. This particular specimen is an extraordinary rendering of the famed New York Giants lefthander Rube Marquard, presented here in a remarkable image that unlike the photographic treasures of most of the issue, more closely resembles a painting because of the hand-done components that perhaps presages the airbrushing that would take place several generations later on Topps cards. The elegant roughly 8-by-9 3/4-inch photograph includes printing on the front that notes “Supplement to The Sporting News St. Louis, Nov. 9, 1911.” The player’s name – Richard W. Marquard and “New York National League” – are printed on the bottom. Presented here in a BGS 2 (Good) holder, the supplement (No. 72, though the cards themselves are unnumbered) actually presents in a far superior condition, probably Ex-Mt, that earns the Good designation only because of a lengthy crease of about 8 inches that is visible only on the back.
