Presented is a spectacular game-worn jersey from one of the great stars of the National League in the 1970s, Cesar Cedeno, a four-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner who may have suffered as much as any player under the unfair assessment of being “The Next Willie Mays.” The style jersey matches the Astros 1977 and 1978 home and road jerseys and is all original, and the No. 28, his NOB and Size 42 Sand-Knit tagging on the front tail point to the legendary star. The fabled “Rainbow” Astros jersey remains a hobby classic so many decades later, and this one boasts exceptional color and clarity in the harmonic knit stripes and black-and-red silk-screen star logo and the black silk-screened “Astros” on the front. “Cedeno” appears in black tackle twill on a white nameplate. His No. 28 in black and white tackle twill appears on the back, with a bit of puckering to the numbers; the shirt shows game use and some small team repairs to the “8” in his No. 28 on the inside back. Truly an amazing artifact from a player rudely burdened with perhaps impossible expectations, a man with more than 2,000 hits, almost 1,000 RBI and 550 stolen bases, who still only narrowly whiffed on a Cooperstown plaque for his efforts.
