One of the more intriguing modern day rarities, offered is a 1989 Topps #343 Gary Sheffield Vault Proof, graded BGS NM-MT 8… but not just any Gary Sheffield proof, this example has a gold border! A handful of examples of 1989 Topps cards with this border variation have turned up, this particular example being the most prominent. Everything about the card is exactly the same as the issued card except for the gold border on the front where a white border would normally be found. The back is completely finished, also like a regularly issued card. Theories regarding this variation abound, including that this was a test shot for a Gold Winners type set, something that would be implemented by Topps a couple years later. A modern day mystery found on one of the best rookie cards in the 1989 Topps set!
