After 13 sterling seasons with his beloved Detroit Tigers, Mickey Lolich had been traded to the New York Mets by the time the Detroit Chapter of the March of Dimes honored him with this remarkable 14 ½-inch trophy was awarded to him by the Chicago baseball writers following his historic effort in the 1968 World Series when he won three games and walked away with the MVP Trophy. This amazing trophy has an elegant bronze depiction of a handicapped youngster with leg braces and crutches standing atop a 6-inch square wooden panel base that is 4 inches tall. A 2-inch in diameter bronze medallion sits in the upper-left corner, with inscriptions noting “March of Dimes, Detroit National Foundation” and insignia at the center. A 4-inch by 1 ¾-inch bronze nameplate has engraving that reads, “Mickey Lolich, Distinguished Athlete Citizen, 1976.” With all that bronze and heavy wooden base comes considerable heft; the essentially pristine and as-issued artifact weighs in at just about 10 lbs.
