Presented is an attractive example of an iconic football issue, the 1956 Topps set that marked the company’s debut in making a mainstream set of the National Football League. The oversized 2 5/8-by-3 5/8-inch cards employ blazing background colors in a complete set that is almost evenly divided between Very Good and Excellent, with 16 cards above the range to Ex-Mt and about a dozen below. It all makes for a wonderful presentation of an historic issue, one that is peppered with legendary names from the league’s pre-merger Golden Era. The missing numbers (14): No. 1, 6, 7, 10, 13, 25, 26, 37, 45, 74, 85, 97, 106 and 109. Here’s the breakdown: No. 5 Webster Rookie – Excellent-Plus (st), 8 Creekmur – Excellent, 9 Groza – VG-Ex, 11 Blanda – VG-Ex, 12 Ameche – Ex-Mt o/c, 17 Tunnell – Very Good, 22 Cardinals Team – VG, 28 Bednarik – Ex-Plus, 34 Mann – Good, 36 Donovan – VG, 41 Brown Rookie – Good, 42 Fears – Ex-Mt, 44 Schmidt – VG-Ex, 47 George – VG, 48 Colts Team – Ex, 50 McElhenny – VG, 53 Gifford – VG-Ex, 58 Matson – VG, 60 Moore – VG, 61 Redskins Team – VG o/c, 71 Jones Rookie – VG, 77 Conerly – Ex, 78 Hirsch – VG-Ex, 86 Tittle – Fair, 88 Stautner – VG-Ex, 101 Grier Rookie – VG, 105 McCormack – VG, 110 Perry – Ex o/c, 116 Layne – VG and Checklist – VG.
