This is a lot reminiscent of the kind of auction lots from the famous early card shows in the 1980’s, with a vast array of 1960’s and 1970’s cards, plus hundreds of mostly Hall of Famers and stars (and rookies) from the 1980’s and 1990’s. It’s the kind of lot that would prompt a lot of examination in a live sale; in this situation, we’ll try our best to provide a good look at what’s inside.
We’ll start with a Fair condition example of the iconic 1953 Topps Satchel Paige card, plus a pile of Nolan Ryan cards, nearly two dozen (and separate from another 40 Ryans that appear in a binder), including a VG 1969 Topps, three (3) Ex-Mt or so 1971’s and others from 1972-74. There is a 1963 Topps No. 390 Henry Aaron (Ex-Mt), a Nr-Mt 1963 Topps Power Plus card and the two 1972 Topps Aaron cards – both Ex-Mt o/c. There is also a 1960 Topps Willie Mays (Good), a 1960 Topps Master & Mentor (Ex-Mt) and a 1968 Topps Mays (Ex-Mt o/c), plus Excellent Clemente cards from 1972 No. 309 and 1973 No. 50.
Some of the other single HOFer highlights include (14) 1985 Topps Kirby Puckett rookies, a VG 1975 Topps Brett rookie and two (2) Nr-Mt 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. rookies. There are a number of third-party graded and slabbed stars as well, including a 1985 Topps Mark McGwire in PSA 8 (plus two unslabbed, largely Nr-Mt to Mt and Excellent), three (3) 1987 Donruss McGwires, including a PSA 8 and a PSA 9, a 1984 Fleer Ripken PSA 9, 1984 Fleer Darryl Strawberry PSA 9, 1983 Donruss Wade Boggs PSA 8 and a 1990 Leaf Sammy Sosa PSA 8.
Much of the bulk of the lot comes from a huge grouping that features an eclectic array of 400-500 cards of 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s HOFers and stars, perhaps 40-50 sealed packs or boxed sets from mostly the 1980’s and 1990’s, including a Nr-Mt to Mt 1983 Kellogg’s complete set (60), a 1985 Topps HOF group (12), and the aforementioned dozens of boxed sets like 1980’s Topps All-Stars, K-Mart, Holsum, Fleer, Donruss, Burger King, Fleer World Series subsets, Classic, Ralston Purina and many others.
The remainder of the lot is in two binders totaling roughly 200 cards or so; one is 1950’s-70’s Topps and Bowman stars and HOFers, and the other is a pitcher’s binder that features Ryan, Steve Carlton, Randy Johnson, Tom Seaver and Roger Clemens.
That binder includes: (40) Ryan cards, including 1971-74 and later; (40) Carltons, including a run from 1967-83; (50) Randy Johnson cards, including about two dozen Topps, Fleer and Donruss rookies from 1989; (27) Seaver cards from mostly the 1980’s; and (2) Clemens cards from 1985 and beyond.
The last piece is that stars and HOFers binder, which is mostly Very Good to Ex-Mt, with some above and below, and includes: (5) 1950 Bowman commons; a 1959 Sandy Koufax (Good); a 1959 Sparky Anderson rookie (Nr-Mt o/c); (2) 1963 Eddie Mathews (Nr-Mt) and a 1964 Mathews, also in Nr-Mt; (4) 1964 Topps League Leaders; a 1962 Topps Frank Robinson; a 1963 Topps Stan Musial (Ex-Mt); and nearly two dozen 1970 Topps stars and All-Stars.
