Here are three important vintage Topps sets from the late 1970s – two (2) 1978 sets and a 1977 set – in conditions ranging from a knockout Nr-Mt to Mt to Ex to Nr-Mt, comprising in total an important aggregation of nice condition cards from two key issues.
The first set is from 1978, offered here in a blazing, clean and consistent Nr-Mt to Mt condition, with nice centering and no discernible divergence between the Hall of Famers, major stars and commons. The set (726 cards) in an 800-count box displays the coveted “vending bend,” suggesting a largely uncirculated and pristine-condition offering.
The second 1978 set is in binders and only slightly less imposing, likely Excellent to Near-Mint condition, with the majority probably Ex-Mt and better. It is missing a single card, No. 610 Mike Schmidt.
The breakdown of the keys follows: No. 20 Rose – Ex, 34 McCovey – Nr-Mt, 36 Murray – Nr-Mt, 60 Munson – Ex, 100 Brett – Nr-Mt, 160 Palmer – Nr-Mt, 170 Brock – Nr-Mt, 173 Yount – Ex-Mt, 200 Jackson – Nr-Mt o/c, 400 Ryan – Ex-Mt, 510 Stargell – Nr-Mt, 580 Carew – Nr-Mt o/c, 670 Rice – Ex-Mt, and 700 Bench – Nr-Mt. Two team cards, Yankees and Twins, have been marked up in the checklist boxes.
The third set is from 1977 (660 cards), found here in generally Excellent to Near-Mint condition, with some above and below, but most likely in Ex to Ex-Mt. The stars – as indicated by the breakdown that follows – are generally in a condition that matches the overall range; perhaps 70-80 cards have centering concerns that might prompt upgrading and virtually all of the Team Checklist cards have been marked up.
