Where Babe Ruth was flamboyant, Lou Gehrig was modest. Ruth supplied vigor, and Gehrig was resolute. The dichotomy goes on endlessly, and the two quintessential Yankees complemented each other perfectly. We're justifiably fascinated, so many years later, by the manifestations of their contrasts, and the dovetailing of purpose and personality that was the offshoot of their dissimilarity. Presented is an embodiment of the contrast in the form most easily, and visually, appreciated. Here is the Lou Gehrig signed ball which strays from Gehrig's normal practice of signing on the side panel and leaving the sweet spot for Ruth. This Spalding No. 5 King of the Diamond baseball features a scarce red ink signature from Gehrig on the sweet spot. The signature grades a "4-5" and has been preserved by a piece of tape, which has long-since been removed leaving a 2x1 discolored block where the signature resides. The evidence of Gehrig's fleeting presence was not nearly as immediately-available to the eye, but still prepared to meet its gaze with grace when seen at last. This Lou Gehrig ball will fulfill the fantasy of anyone who has sought a strong, outstanding example on a period official ball. A relic to inspire the sin of pride, an emotion fittingly tempered only by the humility of the signer. The signature arrives with a full LOA from PSA/DNA.
