Arguably the most revered figure in the history of postwar Major League Baseball, Mickey Charles Mantle, is further immortalized in this stunning original artwork by yet another New York City figure of considerable renown, the painter Robert Stephen Simon. In a striking close-up portrait of The Mick, Simon’s 24-by-30-inch oil on canvas depicts Mantle in front of a vivid red background that is evocative of a famed Sport Magazine cover from 1957 that followed Mickey’s incredible Triple Crown season from the year before. An enormous blue Sharpie Mantle autograph is affixed across his shoulders. The original artwork is seemingly in the same condition as when the famed artist finished his final brush stroke. Simon is one of the most prolific baseball artists in the country dating back more than four decades, with works that are instantly recognizable to generations of fans and collectors, including some of the classic prints that have been popular with autograph hounds over the same span.
