It is arguably the best baseball issue of the decade for Topps, the clean 1983 Topps design that neatly mimicked its prestigious ancestor from two decades earlier. And it came early in the expansion of the modern hobby, when new companies were entering the fray and new concepts – like the factory set – were in their infancy. While factory sets would proliferate dramatically later in the decade, Topps reportedly did not produce one in 1983, save only for a limited run that was provided for dealers as a sales promotion. This “factory set” comes from that relatively small test run, presented here in the original plain brown box, sans any advertising or promotional verbiage. And it remains sealed 36 years later just as it was at the time, the box seemingly in Ex-Mt condition and the 792 pasteboards thusly entombed, almost certainly in Near-Mint to Mint or better condition. And this in an issue that boasts three of the most important Rookie cards of the era: Sandberg, Gwynn and Boggs.
