Here is one of the great peripheral Topps issues from the 1960s, the unique 1964 Baseball Stand-Ups, the die-cut, blank-backed beauties that were offered as a stand-alone product in the fabled Topps curriculum. In the offered set – virtually unimprovable – the key Mickey Mantle card is found in a CTA 8 holder, and everybody else (and we do mean everybody minus Willie Mays, which is graded PSA 7) is neatly ensconced in PSA 8 holders. In a standard-size issue that is made up of 20 Hall of Famers and 22 short-printed cards, the lineup could hardly be more impressive: Aaron, Banks, Cepeda, Clemente, Drysdale, Kaline, Killebrew, Koufax, Mantle, Marichal, Mathews, Mays (PSA 7), Mazeroski, McCovey, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Santo, Spahn, Torre and Billy Williams. It’s because of the unique qualities of a die-cut card that enticed youngsters to fold, spindle and otherwise mutilate, that these treasures take on a particular luster when found in such uniform, pristine condition.
Super-High-Grade 1964 Topps Stand-Ups, Mantle CTA 8, Mays PSA 7, Rest are PSA 8s (77)
