The same tobacco conglomerates that launched the 20th Century baseball card phenomenon at the same time produced a wide range of truly striking non-sport offerings, typically with elegant, colorful paintings that depicted everything – and everyone – from actors, Indians, birds, animals, cowboys, and many others. For this classic issue they focused on amateur and professional athletes that typically performed individual sports, track and field, billiards and golf, but the real spotlight was directing to boxing, which dominated this issue with almost half of the entire set reserved for what was arguably the most popular sport in the country as the new century dawned. In this handsome near set, the 2 1/2-by-2 7/8-inch cards are housed in nine-pocket sheets and a binder and are found here in essentially Good to Very Good condition, with the boxing contingent even a bit better than that, more like Very Good to Excellent, with a few cards even reaching Ex-Mt. Two key Jack Johnson variations are included in the mix, with the horizontal card Fair and the vertical one Very Good.
