With the end of World War II and the country’s regard for all things military at an all-time high, the Topps Co., still a year away from sticking its big toe in the baseball card arena, created this charming, colorful Freedom’s War set, a prodigious undertaking at a remarkable 200-plus cards in the complete set. It is replete with a boisterous mixture of paintings and photos of ships, planes, tanks, famous generals, medals and patches, all presented here in a highly collectible Very Good to Excellent condition, with a few below and the emphasis to Very Good, with the 2 1/16-by-2 9/16-inch cards housed in nine-pocket sheets in a binder. A breakdown of some notables or condition exceptions: No. 1 – Good, 183 Patton – VG, 199 Doolittle – Poor, 200 Marshall – Ex o/c, 201 Eisenhower – Fair, 202 Bradley – Ex, some of the patch cards are Fair. The missing Nos.: 21, 23, 25, 60, 61, 62, 69, 73, 97 and 98. There are 32 extras included; about ½ have an unobtrusive single or two-digit number written in pen on the backs.
