With the end of World War II and the country’s regard for all things military at an all-time high, the Topps Co., by now in its fourth year in the baseball card arena, created this charming, colorful Topps Scoops issue, truly one of the most important and valuable non-sport issues ever created. Depicting epic historical moments that span centuries, it’s the last couple hundred years that dominate, with everything from the Alamo to the dropping of the atomic bomb memorialized in spectacular color paintings on the 2 1/16-by-3-inch cards. Adding to the uniqueness of the issue, the backs have a scratch-off component and perhaps a bit more than a dozen cards have that section at least partially intact here, with most of those among the extras included in the mix. A couple of ballplayers managed to make the cut among all this historical gravitas, Babe Ruth and Bob Feller, and thus are coveted elements of the issue because of a demand well beyond simply completing sets. This partial set is in a highly collectible Very Good to Excellent condition, with a few above and below and the emphasis to Very Good, with the Ruth and Feller cards conforming to the broader range. Almost four dozen or so cards have the kind of centering that might typically prompt an upgrade, though not all of those would be severe enough to dictate a formal off-center designation. The missing number: 47, 62, 68, 70, 82, 83, 84, 85, 90, 92, 93, 94, 95, 97, 98, 99, 100, 104, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 113, 114, 115, 118, 119, 120, 121, 126, 128, 130, 132, 133, 135, 136, 137, 139, 143, 148, 150, 151, 152, 153 and 155.
