Regarded among the finest large-format baseball collectibles in the early years of the 20th Century – and this in an era that included the remarkable T3 Turkey Red cabinet cards – the fabled M101-2 Sporting News Supplements feature sepia-toned images of professional players on a heavy cardboard stock, most typically with blank backs. This particular specimen features two Hall of Fame umpires, Billy Evans and Bill Klem, adding to the mystique of an already incredible collectible. The elegant roughly 8-by-10-inch photograph includes printing on a reversed type black box “Supplement to The Sporting News St. Louis, Mar. 31, 1910” on the top; in this instance the photograph of four umpires is presented horizontally, though most of the M101-2 cards are presented vertically. The umpires’ names – “Wm. Evans and Silk O’Loughlin American League” on one panel and “Wm. Klem and W. Johnston National League” on another are printed in the same fashion on the bottom. Presented here is a BGS 3 (Very Good) example of the series that actually presents a bit better, probably Excellent, that earns the Very Good designation only because of light creasing on one corner that is visible only on the back; the supplement is No. 38, though the cards themselves are unnumbered.
