This is an imposing lot featuring one of the most beloved Yankees from the 1970’s, the fabled catcher Thurman Munson who died tragically in an airplane accident in the prime of a career that could well have wound its way to Cooperstown. Presented here are 30 of the coveted vintage Topps cards from his truncated career, including duplication, plus another 20 produced in the modern era and commemorating the Yankee legend for a later generation. The vintage lineup: 1970 Topps Rookie No. 189 – Very Good; 1971 Topps No. 5 (2) – Very Good; 1972 Topps In Action No. 442 – Near-Mint; 1973 Topps No. 142 (3) – Ex-Mt, Very Good and Fair; 1974 Topps No. 340 (4) – Near-Mint, Ex-Mt and two Very Good; 1975 Topps No. 20 – Good; 1975 SSPC No. 433 (2) – Near-Mint; 1976 Topps No. 650 – Near-Mint o/c; 1977 Topps No. 170 (5) – two Near-Mint, two Ex-Mt and one Very Good; 1978 Topps No. 60 (6) – four Near-Mint and two Ex-Mt; and 1979 Topps No. 310 (5) – three Near-Mint, one Ex-Mt and one VG-Ex. The modern lineup – typically Near-Mint or better – includes cards from Topps Archives, Upper Deck, Swell and the Ted Williams Card Co. There is also a 3-inch in diameter commemorative button (Ex), plus a 3 ½-inch paper version of the same image (Near-Mint).
