This is a fascinating grouping of five important cards from an early Topps issue that predates the company’s launch into mainstream baseball card issues, a quirky offering that featured many of the biggest stars in baseball history. The 11 legends are portrayed on 2 1/16-by-5 ¼-inch “cards” that featured a black-and-white action pose that could be removed from a blazing red perforated background to provide a stand-up depiction. With that kind of underlying paradigm, the cards were routinely molested by young collectors, and this grouping reflects that kind of difficulty, with most of the red background sections missing. Given the desirability of this first-year Topps undertaking, the cards remain enormously expensive even in lower grades. The five-card array includes: 1) Walter Johnson, 2) Lou Gehrig, 3) Babe Ruth (with small piece of his bat missing beyond the cap), 4) Tris Speaker and 5) Mickey Cochrane.
