Presented is an attractive example of the George Mullin card in the coveted 1910 E98 “Set of 30,” a card that looks precisely as it might have looked when it rolled off the presses despite its fabled 110-year heritage. Mullin, one of the greatest pitchers in Detroit Tigers history, was the ace of a Ty Cobb-led crew that won three consecutive American League pennants from 1907-09. He compiled a sterling 228-196 record over 14 years with a 2.82 ERA, including five years with 20-plus wins (29 wins in 1909). The E98s were among the scarcest of the turn-of-the-century Caramel cards, an evaluation hardly jostled by the remarkable “Black Swamp Find” in Defiance, Ohio, eight years ago. The pristine E98s in this auction look for all the world like the denizens of that mystical attic find, and particular pasteboard is relegated to “only” an SGC 4 VG-Ex designation almost certainly based on centering, since the corners are sharp and the blood-red background nothing short of superb.
