This is a simply stunning complete set of the elegant, oversized 1969-70 Topps hoops issue, the 2 ½-by-4 11/16 cards that represented the company’s re-entry to the basketball card arena more than a decade after issuing its historic initial effort in 1957. The splashy white borders showcase the stars of the period in an oval that is particularly effective in showcasing the elongated pasteboards. As noted, the set is spectacular, essentially PSA 8 Near-Mint to Mint from start to finish; indeed, 97 of the 99 cards are in PSA 8 holders, with the remaining two a PSA 7 Near-Mint and a PSA 9 Mint example. That comes out to a No. 20 ranking on the PSA Set Registry, with a GPA of 7.963. There’s not much left to be said. Led by a No. 25 Lew Alcindor Rookie card and matching monsters from the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West and the rest of the NBA royalty at the close of the decade, having such important condition-sensitive cards in blazing PSA 8 entombment is difficult to imagine. The No. 17 Jim Washington is the PSA 9 Mint card, and the super pesky No. 99 Checklist is the sole PSA 7 Near-Mint example.
