Here’s the movie lobby poster that defines the genre, the legendary reversed white type on black denoting perhaps the most influential film ever made, The Godfather, which debuted in 1972 and earned instant acclaim for everybody from screenwriters Mario Puzo (from his book of the same name) and Francis Ford Coppola (director) to actors Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Cann, and Diane Keaton, among others. The simple and unadorned graphic with the movie title and logo is among the most instantly recognizable depictions for a movie lobby poster, provided here in a massive 60-by-40-inch classic that presents in a spectacular fashion, even in the face of a 12-inch tear from the top that has been neatly repaired and some of the miniscule tearing that comes from repeated rolling of an enormous sheet to fit into mailing tubes. While there is some slight wear to the edges and minor paper loss, almost all of these – save for the large tear – would be duly covered by a proper matting and framing. There is a single “Godfather” handwritten notation in pencil that appears at the back of the poster. The Paramount Pictures logo appears on the lower left of an artifact that effectively serves as a showcase item from the second-oldest major film studio in the country.
