If for some reason you were out of town in the 1980s, here’s a chance to catch up on almost every Fleer and Donruss baseball card issue for most of the decade, each and every one in a condition not a whisper different from when they rolled off the presses all those years ago. Indeed, here are 16 iconic complete sets from the two manufacturers that arrived on the scene in 1981 to bust the Topps’ monopoly in the baseball card business and helped to rearrange the hobby as never before. The Fleer run is from 1981-89, skipping only 1983; the Donruss run goes from 1981-88. More than ½ of the group is made up of factory sets; the remaining are virtually no different, easily Near-Mint to Mint or better, with no discernible difference between the Tier One Hall of Famers and the lowliest of commons. The breakdown: 1981 Fleer (660) – Near-Mint to Mint or better, 1982 Fleer (660) – Factory set (opened), 1984 Fleer (660) – Nr-Mt to Mt or better, 1985 Fleer (660) – Nr-Mt to Mt or better, 1986 Fleer (660) – Factory set (opened), 1987 Fleer (672) – Factory set, 1988 Fleer (660) – Factory set, 1989 Fleer (660) – Nr-Mt to Mt or better; 1981 Donruss (605) – Nr-Mt to Mt or better, 1982 Donruss (660) – Nr-Mt to Mt or better, 1983 Donruss (660) – Factory set in original cellophane packages with Puzzle, 1984 Donruss (660) – Factory set (opened) with Puzzle, 1985 Donruss (660) - Factory set in original cellophane packages with Puzzle, 1986 Donruss (660) - Factory set in original cellophane packages with Puzzle, 1987 Donruss (660) - Factory set in original cellophane packages with Puzzle, and 1988 Donruss (660) - Factory set in original cellophane packages with Puzzle.
