Presented is an historic pair of boxing trunks dating from the inception of the National Golden Gloves amateur boxing competition which first began in 1928. Bearing the manufacturer’s label in the waist of Lowe & Campbell Athletic Goods, which operated in Kansas City, Mo., before being acquired by Wilson Sporting Goods in 1931 (dating the trunks to 1928-31). The bright-yellow satin trunks bear the embroidered logo of the sponsoring newspaper “St. Louis Globe-Democrat” (the newspaper itself traces its roots to 1875) and the beautiful sewn-on logo of satin boxing gloves is outstanding as well. The Size 28 trunks exhibit signs of usage; this is a marvelous artifact that bridges the genres of athletic boxing apparel and historically significant newspapers. The City of St. Louis enjoys a rich boxing history, with names like Henry Armstrong and Sonny Liston spending a good deal of time there over their storied careers.
