Presented is a spectacular front page from the long-defunct New York Herald, the May 16, 1865, issue that detailed the historic trial of the conspirators linked to John Wilkes Booth and the assassination of President Lincoln a month earlier. The 15-by-20 ½-inch front page is in wonderful condition, and displays only the expected wear at the folds and is carefully presented in an elaborate 23-by-28-inch ornately framed piece that is in Near-Mint condition. The heavy frame has intricate black-metal figural accents about 2 inches wide on all sides, handsomely presenting the historic artifact that boasts a headline that announces “The Trail,” across a single column of the six columns of the front page, with fully 10 subheads in descending type size and importance, one of the hallmarks of journalism stylings at the time. With type that seemingly is 4 point or even smaller, that’s a lot of wallop for the 4-cent price tag announced in the upper right-hand corner.
