Presented is an impressive near set of largely Very Good to Ex-Mt cards from the classic 1941 Play Ball issue, the iconic full-color issue that was the final of three issues from Gum Inc., as the Second World War loomed and a hiatus in baseball card production would be the norm. An imposing array of HOFers headline: Jimmie Foxx, Pee Wee Reese, Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell, Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, Chuck Klein, Bill Dickey, Lefty Gomez and others. At 68 cards, the set is missing but four cards: Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and two commons, making the lot a rare opportunity to pick up virtually a complete set of one of the key issues of the era. The four missing cards: Nos. 11, 14 Williams, 33 and 71 DiMaggio. The near set comes out to roughly 54 percent being Excellent to Ex-Mt and 43 percent Very Good to VG-Ex, a remarkable overall grade for this colorful issue. Here’s the breakdown: Ex-Mt (4) – No. 23, 25, 28 and 32; Excellent (33) – No. 3, 4, 5, 9 m/c, 10 Vaughan, 12, 17, 18 Greenberg, 19 Gehringer, 20 Ruffing, 21, 24, 26, 29, 30, 31, 32, 35, 38, 41, 42, 43, 44, 46 o/c, 47, 48, 50 o/c, 51 o/c, 52, 53, 56, 60 Klein and 65; VG-Ex (17) – No. 2, 6 Hubbell, 16, 22, 34, 36, 39, 45, 49, 54 Reese, 55, 58, 59, 61, 64 Doerr, 66 and 69; Very Good (12) – No. 7, 8 Ott, 27, 37, 40, 57, 62, 63, 67, 68, 70 Dickey and 72 Gomez; and Good (3) – No. 1, 13 Foxx and 15 Cronin.
