Here’s a nifty bit of mid-Depression era Major League Baseball business as tartly performed by the Hall of Fame Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. In a brief note on official Commissioner’s Office letterhead, Landis responds to an apparent request from a Wilbur P. Robinson (not to be confused with Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson) that Landis serve on an advisory board. The legendarily thorny Landis responds thusly, “I do not go on boards of that character, primarily for the reason that it is my observation they do not function.” Ouch. Under closings of Good Wishes and Yours Truly comes a Landis fountain pen autograph. The 8 ½-by-10 ½-inch single-page letter is in Near-Mint condition, with folds. Full LOA from BAS.
